I have just returned from the 2nd International Conference of the Image, where I delivered my latest paper, Picture Box Redux: New Perspectives on Pictorial Imaging.

San Sebastian is a breathtakingly beautiful part of the world, but by far the highlight of the event was the input of the conference participants.

A truly international combination of practitioners and theorists engaged in non-stop casual discussion in an intensely creative and supportive atmosphere.

As one presenter put it, “Yay Team!”

Cyberbehavior at Laval

Early in August, I had the pleasure of accepting an invitation to visit the Laboratory of Cyberbehavior expert Dr. Matthieu Guitton, at the Centre de Recherche Université Laval Robert Giffard in Quebec City.

We met in Rome earlier this year at the Design Principles and Practices Conference at Sapienza University and discovered a mutual interest in Cyberworlds.

I spent the day with Matthieu and his research team, who are exploring a variety of fascinating subjects including, immersive role play, avatar proximity, skin dimensions and non-required social actions.

21st Century Storyboards

Darren Vandenburg is an animation Storyboard Artist who works from his home in Randalstown, Co. Antrim.

The backbone of his studio set-up consists of a 13 inch MacBook, Adobe Photoshop, a 21 inch Wacom Cintiq tablet and a broadband connection. Detailed model sheets are used for reference.

Adobe Photoshop software lets him work in levels of rough and clean drawings. Dedicated controls allow him to zoom-in and scroll the image at will.

He draws directly on its 21″ pressure sensitive screen using a stylus. The screen rotates and angles like a traditional animation light table.

Machinima in Second Life

The Refuge and Expansion by AM Radio

Machinima is a method of 3D CGI (Computer Graphic Imagery) Film Making wich uses a game engine to render scenes rather than a CGI software rendering package such as Mental Ray or Render Man.

Software such as FRAPS may be used to capture scenes which may then be edited using Digital Editing software such as iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

Second Life with its emphasis on user created content provides a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) variation for this production workflow with the distinct difference that the content created may be explored in-world by visitors to the region.

Wiki Projects

Year 2 Design students have been using a wiki for developing concept ideas on their time-based media projects.The platform supports peer learning in a user friendly 24/7 asynchronous environment.

The wiki allows the students to discuss project ideas, post research such as youTube links, comment on each others postings and receive tutor feedback.

BDes Animation Students visit to Passion Pictures in London’s Soho

A visit Thursday to London’s Passion Pictures in Soho, by 2nd year BDes Design and Communication animation students and their tutor, lecturer Lee Cadieux, was part of the annual School of Creative Arts trip to London.

The visit was hosted by Studio Manager Christopher Knotts and included a tour, show reel viewing, refreshments and a question and answer session. Passion Pictures is famous for the animations it has produced for Gorillaz rock videos as featured on the MTV Music awards.
